Charting Changes: 2009 Ford Edge

Staff Report

Sport Package, Blue Suede Package add spice to success.

08-27-08: Year two of the Ford Edge crossover brings a number of refinements and new features Ford says that buyers have been asking for. The Edge has been a good seller in 2008 as it offers a good combination of style, fuel efficiency, and spirited performance.

The big story for 2009 is the new Edge Sport model, aimed at customers who want a sportier look and a personalized vehicle. The Edge Sport rolls on available 22-inch polished aluminum wheels or the standard 20-inch premium painted wheels.

The 22 inch wheel/tire handling package elevates handling and control on a road course or twisty mountain road, but still delivers a ride agreeable for even a daily driver. High performance P265/40-R22 Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires are mounted on massive 22X9 forged, polished aluminum wheels delivering a jaw-dropping stance. Performance tuned shocks, springs and steering components are added to augment the larger tire & wheel combination.

The Sport model also includes an eight-piece, factory-installed body kit that includes a unique front air dam, side skirts, lower door caps and a rear skirt, all finished in body color, instead of the dark lower finish on other Edge models. The front air dam comes with integrated fog lamps and a lower grille insert. The sport model is available in four exterior colors: Black, Redfire, Brilliant Silver and a limited-run Sport Blue.

Also coming in 2009 is the latest version of SYNC which adds 911 Assist – with no monthly fees – to the industry-first system of voice-activated control and connectivity for mobile phones and MP3 players. Ford also adds to the option list, its next generation navigation system with SIRIUS Travel Link, which gives drivers and passengers access to up-to-the-minute information and entertainment including coast-to-coast coverage of real-time traffic and weather reports; fuel options from more than 120,000 stations sorted by price and distance; major league pro and college sports as well as movie listings from more than 4,500 theaters.

Other features include a new in-cabin ambient lighting package and such customer-friendly standard features as passenger grab handles and a cargo management system with four hooks, two tie-downs and a cargo net. Responding to consumers, the air vents in the 2009 Edge have been changed for more ease of operation and to give more control over air flow.Passenger grab handles have been added as standard as have cargo hooks, tie-downs and a cargo net. Interior color combinations have been revised as well.

Like the Ford Fusion, a slick and stylish blue suede interior appearance package is available for 2009 that has sumtuous Charcoal black leather-trimmed seats with Alcantara Blue Suede inserts and Blue contrast stitching on leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Nice!

Powertrains remain the same with the 265hp 3.5-liter V-6 and 6-speed automatic transmission. Edge is available in both FWD and AWD configurations. Getting up into the mid 20’s for highway MPG, the Edge has proven that you can have SUV utility, car like handling, and efficiency too.
