1976 Mustang

1976 came and went with little fanfare. The bicentennial craze was sweeping the nation and disco fever had the radio waves all but confiscated. Mustang continued with few changes. A couple new colors inside and out were offered, but engines and horsepower remained the same. Sales for 1976 was virtually the same as 1975 with 187,567 units sold.

Of note was the availability of a 4-speed manual transmission for the 302 V8 which had to be huge. The 2.8 liter V6 cars also were now able to be optioned with a C4 automatic transmission.

New marketing packages were offered for 1976 including the “MPG” and “Stallion”. Like most of the notions from the 1970’s, these packages had little meaning. They were essentially stickers, stripes, and a few advertisements. The Cobra II package with it’s stickers, stripes, and spoilers was making appearances in Charlie’s Angels episodes. Unfortunately it was available with all engines including the 4 and 6 cylinders which watered down the Cobra legend.
