1972 Mustang

By now the first environmental movement against cars had done well to spoil the fun for Mustang enthusiasts. The greenies had gotten their way with federally mandated rules that forced automakers to add pollution controls to their cars that significantly reduced horsepower. The largest most powerful engines were dropped from the option sheet and the remaining engines were neutered. Even transmission choices were reduced, allowing a 4-speed manual only on the largest engine. In California, even the 3-speed manual was banned from all but the base six cylinder engine.

To make matters even worse, the society of automotive engineers (SAE) adopted a new horsepower rating procedure that now rated horsepower at the rear of the transmission instead of at the crankshaft. Known today as “SAE net” horsepower ratings, the engines were required to also be fitted with accessory drives including water pump, alternator, power steering, and any other belt driven item that was to be in production.

This new rating took what was left of the horsepower and dealt the final blow. Gone were the big numbers both in spirit and in print. The base six cylinder engine had dropped from 145 hp to 99. The top end engine option went from a fire breathing BOSS 429 at 370 hp to a mild mannered 351 4V with 266 net hp.

Ford had cancelled the performance options and models including the BOSS versions. The Mach 1 package became essentially a trim and styling move. Only minor changes occurred on the styling front for 1972 including a few emblem changes and a revised grille for an appearance package.

Ford did offer a wild looking “Sprint” package that has become collectible in modern times. These came in white with a sky blue and red accent stripe package and were very distinctive. They are very rare today and highly sought after.
