It’s been coming for some time. Now the 2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 is soon upon us, arriving early next year. The new top Camaro is slated well above the SS to take on the likes of the Shelby GT-500.
Rumor is that new top getaway car for convenience store thieves and trailer park thugs has just SAE tested out at 570hp. The ZL1 will get that power from a version of the 6.2 liter supercharged V8 found in the rip snorting Cadillac CTS-V.
Of course as muscle car wars go, it is already rumored that the GT-500 that will come next year will meet the Camaro ZL1 with over 600hp. That power will come from anything rumored to be a larger displacement version of its 5.4 supercharged motor to a new twin-turbo plant. We will see.
One advantage Ford has in the muscle car game is that the GT-500 is Ford’s top performance car. The Camaro is permanently in the shadow of the Corvette and must be always kept just below it in performance. Too bad for Camaro, the Mustang has no such fences.
While the ZL1 is a fat meaty looking car it doesn’t have near the presence and pizazz the Shelby brings. The interior and exterior are understated, barely upgraded from even the V6 models. Performance is often less about the presentation, but it’s nice to get some bling for your money too.
No doubt we will see one a few years down the road with some Metallica and Dokken stickers, duct tape on the seats, and primer spots to dress it up. That way when its owner is speeding away from the next Quikee-Mart knock down, it’l blend right in with the other Camaros.
