The Shelby GT350R-C Mustangs of Multimatc Motorsports raced to a 1-2 finish Saturday at Lime Rock Park. With back to back wins at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park and Lime Rock Park, the #158 team of Austin Cindric and Jade Buford is in third while the #15 team of Scott Maxwell and Billy Johnson is fifth in points.
On Saturday July 25th Cindric would qualify fourth while teammate Maxwell would start from the rear of the field after electrical issues sidelined them during qualifying. The Shelby GT350R-C that Maxwell and Billy Johnson drove was a brand new car built in just 10 days.
In race trim, Maxwell was on a mission and was up to third place after an hour of competition while Cindric was in the second position. After driver changes on pit road, Buford would be in second followed by Johnson in third. The teammates would swap second place back and forth before Johnson would take command of the position.
With 35 minutes remaining, the teammates would pass the leader for first and second. Johnson would extend his lead over Buford to 3 seconds by the end of the race as he drove to the win. Buford would maintain second after a hard fought battle giving Multimatic its first 1-2 finish with the GT350R-C.
“Getting a new car built in one week was incredible”, said Johnson “The result is deserving of the team’s hard luck and dedication.”
In just three races, the Shelby GT350R-C has two poles and two wins. Both Multimatic cars have won with the new car showing the team’s versatility and talented drivers. The win Saturday was Maxwell’s 10th Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge victory and the 17th for Johnson.
“It was a great battle but Billy Johnson fought me clean”, said Buford “I couldn’t be happier finishing first and second. We’ve definitely been building momentum, so we just have to keep pushing for the Championship.”
The Continental Tire Sportscar Challenge is off for a week before returning to action August 8 & 9 at Road America. The race can be seen live on imsa.com.
