01-11-08:What many people don’t know is that Scottsdale, Arizona is one of the most car conscious metro areas in the West, second only to Beverly Hills. There are more exotic, classic, and collector cars per capita than most other cities in the country.

The warm mild winters, resort atmosphere, and high zoot character of Scottsdale also provides a lot of places for an auto enthusiast to entertain their yen. If you are coming to town for Barrett-Jackson and have some extra time on your hands, we have a few suggestions as to where you might go.

The Penske Racing Museum

The Penske Racing Museum celebrates 40 years of the winning tradition of Team Penske, showcasing a one-of-a-kind collection of vintage racing cars and memorabilia. The museum was designed as the anchor for the spectacular new North Scottsdale Auto Mall facility, which was completed in December 2002. The attention to detail with which the museum and the entire facility were designed exemplifies their dedication to excellence and commitment to making sure that visitor's expectations are not only met, but exceeded. 18 racing and vintage cars are on display including 11 of the 13 Penske Racing Indy 500 winning cars. Best of all, it's free. http://penskeracingmuseum.com

Scottsdale Pavilions

The warm winters in Scottsdale afford the luxury of a local tradition known as the Saturday Night Car Show at Scottsdale Pavilions. The casual cruise-in show takes place in the shopping center parking lot every Saturday from about 3:00 pm until well into the night. The show typically gathers 150-200 cars on an average Saturday night, with an eclectic mix of classics, hot rods, modern muscle, exotics, and imports. It is nothing to see a row of Mustangs new and old, Mini Coopers, Corvettes, and Ferraris. The free show is a must visit during the winter as the 65-75 degree temps bring them out every Saturday Night. Scottsdale Pavilions is on the north-west corner of Indian Bend Road and the Loop 101 Freeway.

Russo and Steele Collector Car Auction

Barrett-Jackson isn’t the only game in town. Just a mile away from the Barrett-Jackson site at WestWorld, is the smaller yet competitive tent complex for the “other auction”. With expanded venue facilities, they will offer over 500 of the finest collector automobiles over four full days of auction excitement.
