2010 Barrett-Jackson Sales Up 11 Percent

Story By Sam Haymart

Better mood, better aura, and higher sales mark beginning of year.

01-27-10: The 2010 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Collector Car Auction was good for Ford and Mustang this year, showcasing many great sales and a surprise debut from Carroll Shelby. In addition, the total sales for the 2010 event were improved over 2009 by 11%, coming in at a total of $68 million dollars.

We noticed early in the week as we talked to sellers, vendors and buyers alike that the mood was better over last year's dark days. The aura of the event has a telling sizzle. You can feel it in the air, you can see it in people's faces. There were more cars on the block that interested us, people were more optimistic, and when the hammer started to drop the prices seemed to be higher than last year.

When you consider the weather was uncharacteristically bad this year for Scottsdale, it's pretty amazing that the turnout was still up as were sales. “Even with the worst weather the Phoenix area has seen in decades, buyers, sellers and visitors from across the country enjoyed another incredible Scottsdale event,” said Craig Jackson, Chairman/CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “With an 11 percent increase in sales, we showed that buyers have confidence in the market and are choosing Barrett-Jackson as the source to add to their collections. What a great way to start the 2010 auction season.”

That weather of course was the undoing of the Russo and Steele Collector Car Auction located just across the freeway from Barrett-Jackson. Thursday's high winds and red cell downpours caused the collapse of two tents which then blew across the freeway and blocked traffic for hours. Several cars were destroyed in the disaster and the even was closed down through Sunday.

As it relates to Mustangs, a good number of quality cars came across the block and even set some loft sales price benchmarks. Fords and Shelbys dominated the top ten sales of the event as we would expect:

1) 1929 HAMILTON METALPLANE H47 SERIAL #65 AIRPLANE - $671,000 (Lot #1307)

2) 1964 SHELBY COBRA ROADSTER - $478,500 (Lot #1317)

3) 1963 SHELBY COBRA ROADSTER - $401,500 (Lot #1303)

4)1935 CADILLAC SERIES 40 FLEETWOOD IMPERIAL CONVERTIBLE - $302,500 (Lot #1265)

5)2011 FORD MUSTANG GT GLASS ROOF COUPE - $300,000 (Lot #1295.1)

6)1970 PLYMOUTH HEMI SUPERBIRD 2 DOOR HARDTOP - $286,000 (Lot #1289)

7)1952 WATSON ROADSTER CUSTOM BY BLASTOLENE - $280,500 (Lot #1292)

8)2008 FORD MUSTANG FR500S FASTBACK RACECAR - $275,000 (Lot #1027)

10) 1967 FORD MUSTANG CUSTOM FASTBACK - $253,000 (Lot #1287)

With Ford and Shelby powering the energy at the Barrett-Jackson event with their sponsorship, involvement, and appearances by both Carroll Shelby and high ranking Ford managers there was no missing the Blue Oval at the event.
