The latest news is another confirmation of rumors that had already been going around. But the next big change for the GT-500 will likely put the 5.4 boat anchor to bed and use a twin-turbo 5.0. The engine will similar in power, but hundreds of pound less.
The new Coyote 5.0 is replacing the 4.6 liter engine across the board. The new 6.2 liter truck engine is replacing the 5.4 V8 in the trucks and eventually the V-10. This leaves the modular engine family without a home and to pass on into history.
This means the Shelby GT-500 will need a lightweight version of the 6.2 truck engine or a hotted up 5.0. There have already been reports of twin-turbo 5.0 engines being tested here and there, but it is looking more and more like this light weight powerhouse may be exactly what the doctor ordered for the next top Mustang........
Pickuptrucks.com reports:
"Of course, our sources tell us that Ford is already working on a version of the Coyote V-8 that will separate itself from the rest of the future V-8 engine lineup. In cartoons, the Coyote is only beat by a Road Runner. Look for a twin-turbo 5.0-liter V-8, code-named "Road Runner," with well over 500-horsepower to debut first in the Mustang GT500 in 2012 and possibly, in F-150 Harley-Davidson edition pickups."
