Tooele, UT (12 September 2008) – While the field of Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup drivers will be hoping to keep the handling on their Ford Mustangs from being too “loose” in the season-finale SunRichGourmet.com event at Miller Motorsports Park, there will be one racer who might end up feeling very comfortable with that set-up as SuperDrift Champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. will join the series to race in round seven of the Mustang Challenge next Friday, September 19.
Gittin, who has wowed the crowds across the country with his thrilling demonstrations of high-speed, high-yaw running while competing in a Ford Mustang, will look to keep his Mustang Challenge Ford Mustang FR500S pointed a little more straight as he makes his first race start in the series.
While he has plenty of experience looking out the side window to see where he is heading, Gittin is new to road racing. But like several of his soon to be competitors in the Mustang Challenge, Gittin has tackled the new challenge by training at the Miller Performance Training Center, which also utilizes the Ford Mustang as a core element in the high-speed curriculum.
"I have always loved the feeling of the back end skating around, engine screaming, and seeing the tire smoke,” said Gittin Jr., who won the 2005 USA vs JAPAN and the 2007 D1GP World Championship. “Unfortunately I wont be gaining any extra time by entering turns in drift 400 feet prior to the apex, so I plan to do everything I can to temporarily toss my aggressive sideways driving style out the window and focus on being smooth and fast ! I know that the guys I will be racing against all have a lot of experience already in the Ford Mustang, but I feel like I have a decent head start from the car control I have learned from drifting and of course by running at Miller Park in the school. I’m really looking forward to getting behind the wheel and racing a completely different kind of Mustang than I’m used to. My only expectations are to have a lot of fun out there, who knows maybe I will surprise a few people this weekend!”
The SunRichGourmet.com 1000 race weekend will see the inaugural Mustang Challenge season close with a double header race weekend for rounds seven and eight of the 2008 season.
