Millville, NJ (19 September 2008) –Andrew Caddell clinched the inaugural Ford Racing Mustang Challenge for the Miller Cup Championship on Friday with his second place finish at Miller Motorsports Park as his StableOne Racing teammate Terry Borcheller led the 45-minute race from flag to flag for his third career Mustang Challenge victory. Pratt Cole took the final position on the Miller Motorsports podium after emerging from a tight race-long battle with Mike McGovern for third place. McGovern finished the race in fourth, as Dan Aweida netted his career-best Mustang Challenge result, bringing the Flying Horse Motorsports Mustang home in fifth.
The race ran the full 45-minute race distance without a yellow flag period as Borcheller converted his pole position into the lead at turn one, with the field getting cleanly through. A lead pack of four emerged up front, as spots through the order were disputed. As Borcheller grew his lead over Caddell, the best battle proved to be between Cole and McGovern, who was hungry for his first Mustang Challenge podium as the duo battled nose to tail around the 4.486-mile circuit. The parity of Mustang machinery was also on display as the two were in lock step down the long front straight at Miller.
The return to victory lane was a happy one for Borcheller, who will also look for success in Saturday’s Rolex Sports Car Series race.
“The hardest work was getting the car right before the race,” said Borcheller. “Andrew was being a little bit conservative I think in the race, with the championship in play, but I think that was smart. It’s what I would have done! He played it smart and he’s got a good future ahead of him. I’m also really happy for StableOne to get another 1-2 here today and hopefully we can do that again on Sunday.”
While Borcheller was pleased with another win, the biggest smile on the podium was unquestionably that of young new champion Caddell, who is not yet old enough to fully enjoy the champagne as he celebrated his historic inaugural Mustang Challenge championship.
“ It’s a lot of relief ” said Caddell. “To come out as champion is just great. I was hoping to take a win today, but I just had nothing for Terry today and we still have Sunday to try to do that. I want to thank Andrew Hendricks and StableOne Racing for letting me race with them in the second half of the season because without them, I wouldn’t be standing here as champion. I was with two great teams this season with TC Motorsports and StableOne. It feels great to have the championship taken care of today on Friday, and now I can have some fun on Sunday and hopefully we can have another one-two with StableOne again on Sunday with me on top.”
“I had a long pedal the second half of the race and with three laps to go, I didn’t think I had a prayer with Mike (McGovern) coming at me so hard,” said Cole. “It’s great to race with someone like Mike because you know he’s going to race you fair and clean but also tough. He got alongside of me four or five times, he’s tough and tenacious, but clean, so I was happy to hold onto the spot!”
Joe Lee Middlebrooks picked up the BFGoodrich Tires “Take Control” Award for picking up the most positions during the race with his run to 8th after starting from 13th on the grid.
Mike Harvison’s .126 second edge over Andrew Hendricks scored him the Barbasol “Closest Shave” award in the USTest/ Molecule/ GoPro Mustang.
Terry Borcheller added to his race winnings with a $250 check for scoring the “Zantrex-3 Insta-Shot” award for leading the most laps on Friday.
In addition to his third place hardware, Pratt Cole collected the Sunoco “Setting the Standard Award” after showing teamwork, sportsmanship, and a strong measure of both camaraderie and competitiveness.
Mustang Challenge will race again on Sunday at Miller Motorsports Park to close out the 2008 championship.
