This crap is really getting old. Today the Obama administration announced a “land mark” proposal to screw the auto industry even more than ever. His “historic proposal” would raise the corporate average fuel economy to 39 mpg for cars and 27 mpg for trucks, for an average across all sold vehicles in America to 35.5 mpg by 2016.
By 2016! This oversteps the previous legislation enacted in 2007 that would have raised the CAFÉ for cars to 35 mpg by 2020. Not only has the target been set higher, but the deadline moved up by four years. One has to wonder how the automakers are going to meet this goal given they have a 3-4 year lead time on new designs. This means they have to pretty much drop everything they are working on for their very survival and shift gears to serve Obama’s new deal.
The tragedy for automotive enthusiasts here is the pure mathematics of this new proposal virtually erases any possibility that we will be writing about 500hp V8 muscle cars in five years. It erases the likelihood that you will even see commonplace high-performance V8 Mustangs for instance a decade from now.
This new proposal will force automakers to make and sell cars that get 45, 55, and 65 mpg to allow cars that get only 25, 30, and 35 mpg to even exist. This, all to make sure that the average of all cars sold meet a 39 mpg average. Think about that for a minute. Think about the brand new 2010 V6 Mustang that gets in the mid 20 mpg range, the GT and the GT-500 that gets in the low teens. These cars aren’t going to be a priority in five years. No, all of the engineering and development money from here on out will be spent on the latest greatest death-can that can meet regulations.
The costs are going up too. MPG costs money, and even the Messiah claims the new proposal will raise the cost on average for all cars about $1800. Of course we all know that it will be more. In addition, the government will be giving even more of our billions of tax dollars to the automakers to help them meet these new rules. Yep, that’s right. We haven’t bailed out the bankrupt enough yet. Let’s kick them in the teeth some more and pay their medical bills afterwards. Sounds like hope and change we can believe in.
Bottom line is that if you love cars, muscle cars your era is over. Buy them while they are still available and keep them in your garage because they will be soon a high commodity. If they still exist in the future, they wont be cheap and they wont be plentiful.
This new proposal is being sold to us by Obama as a gravely needed change in our culture to save the planet. It is being billed as a proposal that all parties have come to the table and agreed on. "In the past, an agreement such as this would have been considered impossible," said President Obama. "That is why this announcement is so important, for it represents not only a change in policy in Washington, but the harbinger of a change in the way business is done in Washington. As a result of this agreement, we will save 1.8 billion barrels of oil over the lifetime of the vehicles sold in the next five years. And at a time of historic crisis in our auto industry, this rule provides the clear certainty that will allow these companies to plan for a future in which they are building the cars of the 21st century."
The reality is that the automakers had no choice in the matter. Their hand was forced, particularly with GM and Chrysler who’s testicles are effectively in Obama’s hands. Since they came running to the government for a bailout, they are now owned by the Obama mindset. They will agree to this new world order or be fired by the Messiah. Ford and other automakers had little choice to go along with the new proposal as it does do one thing they need - provides a single nationwide standard.
For years California, the paragon of Greenist Socialism, along with a dozen or so other states has been threatening to create their own patchwork of stringent standards. Such a move would have created even more uncertainty for the Big 3, having to engineer for several different state rules. If they weren’t broke and out of business now, it would surely have done the job. While they may have dodged this bullet for the time being with this new agreement, the reality is that we are all in for changes we cannot even fathom.
Elections have consequences. This freight train is headed right at us with nobody to stop it. Even if every Republican in the House and Senate had the backbone to fight it, they don’t have the weight to do it. Thanks to an ignorant electorate we now have one party in charge, the most aggressive radical collection of environmentalists, socialists, and outright Marxists have complete and unstoppable control of our country.
To all those who voted for the new Greenist Socialist Hope and Change, this proud day in America is for you. Start shopping for your new 60mpg death-can while the rest of us bask in the loss of our freedoms.

I think you should quit whining. Most people buy v6 mustangs...not v8. A lighter Mustang with a 4cyl. ecoboost would do for the masses.Once gas hits $4.00 a gallon, and it WILL, people will migrate to fuel sippers again. I love my 03 cobra, dont you think 3800 pounds for a car with the room of a compact is too much? Especially since it cost $35,000 new? I bet the Messiah, as you called your 44th President, can and will do better than the IDIOT you voted in twice.I think President OBAMA should keep GITMO open....that way he can ship the BUSH lovers down there. By the way...how much money do you think the BUSH'S raked in the last time gas $4 ? Think about that!
this is just another nail in the coffin of our individual rights... the messiah has made the USA the laughing stock of the world and we will soon be the SSA ( Socialist States of America) if he continues his takeover... as for me , I will keep my F150 and my SuperSnake and continue fighting for my God given rights!!!
I must point out that I chastised the last administration and it's party in 2007/2008 when they rolled out the first wave of this crap. The nanny-state micromanagement of what we get to drive is a two-party problem. The left side of the aisle however tends to be more zealous about it.
What is particularly egregious about this latest move is that the timing of it and the severity of it.
There is nothing wrong with high efficiency cars. That is NOT the problem. Hell, I drive a small diesel car that gets 40mpg for a daily driver. Got no issues with that.
What is wrong with all of this is that the automotive industry CANT AFFORD THIS RIGHT NOW. Two of the Big 3 are already bankrupt and may not survive. They might not even be here in 10 years. The government is bailing them out to the tune of tens of billions of our tax dollars. Of course the Fed is going to loan them MORE BILLIONS to meet the new rules they are forcing on them. Nice
For the administration in the middle of this crisis to then force them to ramp up new technology, re-organize their entire product plans, and to do it to a draconian level in only 5 years is just without logic, sense, and any level of "smart thinking" as Obama would put it.
It is akin to jumping in the middle of the D-Day landing and forcing all the troops to change to new weapons and take a class on using them all while the Nazi's are blowing the crap out of them on the beach.
Aside from all the ideological arguments most Americans can make for/against the higher CAFE and emissions standards, anyone with any sense has to agree that doing this right now, to this level is dropping a nuclear weapon on our near-fatally wounded automotive industry for no good reason.

ok..just to clear this up as quickly and simply as possible. no V6 or 4cyl. will ever sound or feel the same as mashing down a torquey V8. Im all about american muscle. and also..when i go out to buy a sports car do you think im worried about the gas mileage it gets???!!! no..because no matter how good the gas mileage is it will suck when i drive it..because i mash down the peddle every second i can.
Now its fine if they want the auto makers to build a few "fuel efficient" vehicles..but its stupid to not even give the auto maker or the PEOPLE the choice to decide on what they spend THEIR money on it. I personally will never by a truck or a mustang without a V8..its pointless in my eyes. I love my 5.4liter GAS GUZZLING F150 that turns heads when i feather the throttle and they hear a deep rumble from my custom exhaust..sorry but you cant turn heads in a V6 or 4cyl. Im gonna pretty much end it there. this liberal one track minded governent is F****** our country.
and just for the record..drop the the whole "Bush did this" bull. sorry but your president in 100 days has spent trillions of OUR dollars. more than ANY other president. if you have a brain you should know you dont SPEND money to get out of dead. tell your kids one day why they have to spend so much in taxes.

You obviously bought the wrong car, pinhead. If you're complaining about the inerior space on a 390 hp muscle car, you probably missed the point. Go buy a minivan and shut the fuck up. The fact that Obama is making decisions and asking for powers that no president has, or should even ask for should have you nervous. If it doesn't, you're still drunk on his "hope and change" Kool-Aid cocktail. Sucker born every minute it seems, and last year was a busy year in the sucker maternity ward. "Hope and Change" apparently means spending money faster than any president in history, partying with Stevie Wonder at the White House, and going to basketball games (SHOCKER!!!).
Sippin' on gin 'n' juice...
For the record, the last four years have fallen under our wonderful system of checks and balances. There's plenty of blame to lay, and you liberal douchebags need to start owning up as well. Maybe the Jap car in your garages is the reason they're hooking your house. Think on that.
Now before you start on the "I have a Mustang, not a Prius" tantrum: Don't. You obviously bought the car for the wrong reason. Maybe it matches your wife's throw pillows. Why else would you complain about interior space, and bring up the $35,000 price tag? Are you confused? Is interior space why you bought the car? No. I honestly hope you sell the car tomorrow. Give it to someone who will appreciate it, and when they're backing out of your driveway, do the rest of us a favor and lay down behind it.

So tell me please, how this is good for anyone but the groups ruling this president turned bitch??? Here's who pays: the car manufacturer(the cost to an already strugling automaker, which is rooted in the country sworn to be put first by our so called president who is paying back the "green" groups who helped pay for his campaign, is astounding! They(except for Ford) can't even pay for the cost of the last bill passed! How will they pay for this one now? Second, the consumer(you and I) pay! who picks up the tab for production and development costs? You and I! But here's the deal, we're not going to buy cars WE DON'T WANT! I, just like most Americans, would rather keep the car I have and like than buy a new one with a payment I don't even really want. What's that mean you ask? It means Fuck you automakers! Pay for the development of cars no one will buy! So then the government can use our tax money to keep you floating(that means we, the taxpayers, bought the new cars anyway! We just lost the ability to decide for ourselves or even drive them! Can anyone say socialism? So who gains by all this? Who gets something in the end? Well, mother nature! She's hurting real bad! We all need to sacrafice the things we need for her! She'll be dead in like five years if we dont start eating twigs and driving flinstone cars! If we take good care of her she'll make sure we make it to work on time, that we have the things needed to keep our lights on and our homes intact! She'll do everything we need! Just say fuck you oil companys and she'll make everything work out so you, the American, can still enjoy a long healthy life! NOT!!!
